Sunday, 9th October, 2022 : Home Garden

 Hi all,

So as you know even though the growing season is more or less over, there’s still lots to be done in the garden in autumn.

I’ve been ill for the last week but today, I got myself up and out in the garden.

My objective was to clear my 3 raised beds and in the process, undertake the last harvest!

I started with the raised beds that housed my strawberries & parsnips (I also grew carrots there but they have been harvested already) . Clearing the foliage was east enough. I was actually surprised to see how much foliage the parsnips produced since the last time I tended them. So although removing the foliage was easy, getting those root vegetables out was no joke! They were well and truly stuck! I had to leave that for my hubby to help with after harvesting 3 or 4!

I then turned my attention to the tomatoes. What a jungle! You would never know it once shared it’s home with broad beans!

As I pulled the plants, I noticed I still had quite a lot of fruit left on the vines. It seemed a shame to waste them so I saved a few to see if they could be used.

The final raised bed was the cucumbers and it’s my only disappointment this season. It did really well but I don’t like the variety I grew. That’s on spontaneous seed shopping at the garden centre! I’ve certainly learnt my lesson! No more “ooh it’s organic! I’ll have some of that!” Some proper thought and consideration must occur! That being said, I’m excited about the variety I’ve chosen for next year! So maybe second time’s the charm?

I was surprised with how much produce I ended up with in the end!

Next stop for our home garden will be growing some green manure to revitalise the soil over winter.

What’s happening in your garden?

Clearing Up: Day One

This was what we started with as a reminder: There was all sorts of debris on the plot including a bath. Overgrown bushes & weeds. It's not all bad though, wild raspberries are growing at the back of the plot.  The growing season is more or less over so we'll use this time to clear up the land & revitalise it in time for sowing season.  We managed to clear an eighth of the plot today. DH & I took turns in digging it over & clearing stuff off.  E had fun digging random holes!  We are just going to take it steady. I like that we can see progress already!

And So It Begins!

I signed up for an allotment plot yesterday! I've always been keen to grow our own food but previously I dabbled in pallet gardening & herbs. Needless to say, this is a huge undertaking. I'm going to be documenting our journey on this blog. It'll mostly be photo based.  Stay tuned for our allotment tales!

Better late than never!

Hi all,  I’ve decided to Resurrect our very old blog. This used to be our “Allotment Tales” blog and I’ve decided to use it to blog about our Grow Your Own journey. Mostly because i need to get my writing mojo back. I’m so burnt out presently and gardening brings me such a lot of joy and creativity that i just want to share it all with you!  So stay tuned! And if you want to follow our day to day adventures in the garden, you can follow me on instagram  .
